The monster designs also lean more toward fantasy, which I thought was a nice way to set it apart. Just do a Google image search of Hilda Henriquez if you don’t understand what I mean. I’m talking anime eyes and hair as well as anime, um, physics. Like Phantasy Star, the visuals in God Eater adopt an anime style but Bandai Namco’s game takes it to the next level. It basically feels like a combination of Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter. I also like how God Eater combines the feel of two of my favorite action games. Personally, I consider a 3.5 out of 5 an above average game. I’ve given the last couple, including God Eater 2 Rage Burst the equivalent of a 7 out of 10 (3.5 out of 5) back when I was using a 5-point score system instead of the 10-point system I use now. Admittedly, I’ve scored God Eater the lowest out of all these monster hunting games. That’s the same score I gave Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. That being said, I’m not averse to playing so-called Monster Hunter “clones.” I actually gave Toukiden 2 an 8.5 out of 10.

I even named Monster Hunter World as my 2018 Game of the Year, although it is my first time picking a game from the series as my GOTY (that’s how much of a game-changer World was).

Now in the interest of full disclosure, people who follow me regularly know that I absolutely love Monster Hunter. It’s easier to pick up but still provides plenty of nuances that you can learn the more you play it. God Eater, on the other hand, is like skiing. Monster Hunter is like the former, a bit tougher to learn at first due to its unnatural positioning but an incredible hoot once you get the hang of it. It’s like the difference between snowboarding and skiing. Both are so different in their approach to the genre that I can legitimately see people liking one much more than the other.
This is especially true because of how many options and stats you can modify within the game’s menu, meaning you can end up spending most of your time in the menus rather than in the actual game itself.As someone who can appreciate both games for what they are, I think that’s a mistake. Whilst there is some basic story element to this game, you’ll find that you don’t have time to really care about it as you just want to play the game. Rage Burst takes place 3 years after the events of Resurrection, where a fatal plague with no known cure has begun to ravage the land. In this form, the God Arc will temporarily give invincibility, increased speed and attack, and the ability to dash infinitely. However, God Eater 2: Rage Burst introduces a brand new form called Blood Rage. If you eat the aragami using a God Arc’s predator form, you will go into ‘Burst Mode’, which increases your speed, power and gives you additional perks and weapon options for a short period of time. The gameplay is similar to that of the Monster Hunter franchise, in that you will go on missions to fight specific enemies. The God Arcs also have 3 different standard forms blade, gun and shield, which can be used for short range combat, long range combat, and defense respectively. These individuals are known as the God Eaters, because the God Arcs have the ability to devour parts of the aragami and use these parts for upgrades etc. Fenrir has then selected special individuals that are compatible with these weapons to fight the monsters. So to fight these monsters, the Fenrir Organisation has created a hybrid biomechanical weapon called the God Arc. The aragami also take on traits from their environment, and cannot be defeated with conventional weapons technology.
The aragami are monsters made up of “Oracle Cells”, and whilst they appear to be one creature, they are in fact several, clumped together around a core. If you’ve never played God Eater before, the concept behind the game centres around an enemy known as the Aragami, which in Japanese translates to “violent (ara) god (gami)”, who consume everything in their path. It’s confusing, but in simple terms, they’re the same games, with better graphics and some new gameplay features.

If you purchase the game in EMEA territories, you will also get a free download code for God Eater Resurrection, which is a PS4 and Vita remake of God Eater Burst, which itself is a remake of God Eater, that came out for the PSP.
